Born into a family of photographers, Frederic Francois Boissonnas was born in Geneva in 1858. He was educated in Stuttgart and Budapest. In 1887 he took over the family studio and soon married and had nine children with his wife Augusta. In 1900 he won the first prize at the Paris World's Fair. He established studios in St. Petersburg, Lyon, Reims, Marseille and Paris. In 1903 he made his first trip to Greece, the year in which he also photographed Mount Parnassus at the request of Lord Napier. Since then he has visited the country several times in the context of his collaboration with the Greek state. In 1912 he sailed to the Mediterranean in the footsteps of Odysseus with Victor Bérard and then to Epirus and Macedonia during the Balkan Wars. In 1913 he made an ascent of Mount Olympus and is considered the first to conquer its summit. He died in Geneva at the age of 88. Fred Boissonnas photographed the Greek scene for nearly thirty years, together with his fellow photographer Daniel Baud-Bovy, dean of the Geneva School of Fine Arts. His photographic work combined with his editorial activity contributed to the formation of the image of contemporary Greece abroad.
