Δημήτρης ΑντωνίτσηςDimitris Antonitsis was born in 1966 in Athens. After studying mechanical engineering at the Zurich Polytechnic University and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York, he studied at the New York Film Academy in New York (1992-1993), where he specialized in high-speed microscopic photography. All of his visual work revolves primarily around themes of identity, racial hybridity, miscegenation and political power. He tackled sexuality in relation to self-determination and the position of the individual in society, addressing controversial issues of the time and even in their extreme versions, usually through images of social groups that are still today on the social margins. He often makes references to pop culture and the metropolitan notion of fetish and kitsch. He has presented his works in more than twenty solo exhibitions, the first of which was held in 1997, and has participated in at least fifty group exhibitions in Greece and abroad. He was also featured extensively in the monograph "Showhungry" (Koan Publications), as well as in the photo-novel "Agathon or Panic in Weimar" (Futura Publications). In 1998 he represented Greece at the Faces of Europe exhibition organized in Bonn for the 40th anniversary of the European Parliament and in 1999 he founded Hydra School Projects, an international contemporary art platform based in the historic Sachtourion, which aims to promote the work of Greek and international visual artists. Furthermore, he was awarded for his film Past Glories, Present Despondencies, in collaboration with Robert de Niro's school.
