Aspa Stasinopoulou was born in 1935 in Athens. She moved to Paris and while studying at the École des Beaux-Arts (1959-1963) she met Tsarouchis, with whom she became artistically connected and friendly. She returned to Greece for a short period of time and held her first solo exhibition at the Astor Gallery in 1966, but due to the political and social conditions prevailing during the dictatorship, she settled in London until the fall of the junta. Her early works operate within the framework of abstraction, while the works she made during the dictatorship were aimed at political denunciation. However, she subsequently introduced various materials, techniques and media into her compositions and created mainly installations and constructions, which, being critical and even denunciatory, attempt to constitute contemporary social and political reality. Gradually, by drawing on the iconography and thematics of ancient male statues, which she transformed through various means: installations, constructions, paintings, painted photographs, she created works that highlighted her concerns. Having an early conviction that art should be accessible to the public and disagreeing with the gallery system, she came into contact with art groups such as the Visual Arts Centre, the Art 4+ group, the Group for Communication and Art Education that expressed similar beliefs. Her solo exhibition activity has been limited, exhibiting her work mainly in Athens, Amsterdam and London and in 2009 a major retrospective exhibition of her work was organized at the Benaki Museum. She participated in important group exhibitions, including: Environment - Action, Athens 1981, São Paulo Biennale 1985, Three Generations of Greek Women Artists, National Museum of Women Artists, Washington DC 1989, Metamorphoses of the Modern, National Gallery Athens 1992, 4th Athens Biennale 2013, documenta 14, Kassel 2017, etc. She died in July 2017 in Athens.
