Alexandros Psychoulis was born in 1966 in Volos. He initially studied graphic design at the Athens Polytechnic (1984-1986) and then at the Athens School of Fine Arts, where he studied painting and engraving with P. Tetsis and Th. In the period 1993-1994 he visited as a guest artist the Centre for Research in Art and Science (KETE) in Athens, founded by the sculptor Takis, as a guest artist. The central axis of his visual work is the installations in space, which are activated by the viewer and explore his subconscious, decoding in images or sounds his fears, desires or memories. The exploration of the landscape of digital reality is still a central focus of his work which consists of installations in space, animation, and painting. His first solo exhibition took place in 1991 at the Loulaki Gallery in Hydra, followed by more than 25 solo exhibitions, while he has participated in many group exhibitions in Greece and abroad: among them the 5th and 6th Biennale of Young Artists of the Mediterranean (Spain 1990 and France-Italy 1992, respectively). In 1997 he represented Greece at the 47th Venice Biennale, where he was awarded the Benesse Prize for his interactive work Black Box. In 2005 he was awarded the "Art Athina 2 EMST" prize for the work Waterfall. Since 2000 he has been teaching at the Department of Architecture and Engineering of the University of Thessaly, where he is currently a professor.
