Seund Ja Rhee was born in 1918 in Jinju, South Korea. She began her studies at Jissen Women's University in Tokyo, but interrupted them to get married. In 1951 she moved to Paris, where she studied at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière under Yves Brayer and Henri Goetz, and then attended classes where she took classes at Stanley W. Hayter's "Atelier 17". In 1958 she moved to Tourrettes-Sur-Loup, where she set up her atelier and in 1996 built a larger space in the style of the Korean studios. In 1991 she was awarded the title of "Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters". She died in 2009.
