Javier Vilato was born in 1921 in Barcelona. Pablo Picasso's nephew, he moved in 1939 after the Spanish Civil War to Paris, where he remained in the refugee camp of Argelés, from where Picasso managed to get him out. He remained in Paris until the beginning of the Second World War, returned to Barcelona and began his exhibition activity there. He settled permanently in Paris in 1946 on a scholarship from the French government. In the early 1950s he began to work in printmaking, which he developed to the same extent as painting over the years. Indeed, in the late 1960s, he now qualified as an engraver and became a member of the Societé des Peintres et Graveurs Francais. He presented his work in numerous solo and group exhibitions in museums, institutions and galleries in France, Spain, Italy, Italy, Great Britain, Switzerland, Mexico, etc. He died in 2000 in Paris.
