Ioanna Spiteris-Veropoulou was born in 1920 in Smyrna. She began her studies by attending courses at the Law School of the University of Athens, but then studied sculpture at the Athens School of Fine Arts in the studio of M. Tombros. He was a member of the group "Stathmi" and served as its general secretary. In 1940 she married the art critic Toni Spiteris and they lived abroad for a long time, first in Venice and then in Paris, until their return to Greece in the late 1970s. Her early works are characterized by the figurative and realistic references of her anthropocentric compositions. Gradually she is led towards abstraction, simplifying volumes and schematizing forms. In the 1960s he began to use metal, especially iron, and created works that are distinguished by their simple, austere geometric vocabulary. In the 1970s she enriched her compositions with paint and other materials (steel, wood, Plexiglas) and created compositions that are in direct contact with the surrounding space, taking into account the relationships between light and shadow, as well as perspective and depth. She has presented her work in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Greece and abroad, participated in international events and international sculpture symposia where she was awarded with prizes and distinctions. In 1984 she and her husband donated their archive and library to the Teloglio Foundation for the Arts. She died in 2000 in Athens.
