Makis Theofylaktopoulos was born in Athens in 1939. He initially attended classes at the Panos Sarafianos Art Studio (1958-1960) and later studied at the Athens School of Fine Arts (ASKT) in the workshop of Yannis Moralis. During the period from 1969 to 1974, he lived abroad, working periodically in Lausanne, Paris, and New York with a Ford Foundation scholarship. He returned to Greece in 1975 and taught at the School of Fine Arts of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki from 1988 to 2005.
In his early works, he was concerned with contemporary social issues and the violence of everyday life, which he depicted with a unique personal realistic style. Over the years, however, human forms prevail in his artworks, remaining a dominant element in most of his paintings, either predominantly solitary or, less frequently, in scenes with a few figures. He used oil and acrylics to depict these forms, as well as crayons and mixed media. In his later years as an artist, he chose indelible markers as his medium of choice. He also used charcoal to produce drawings.
He exhibited his work in solo and group exhibitions in Greece and internationally, and he represented Greece in international events, such as the Alexandria Biennale in 1977 and Europalia '82, among others. He passed away in Athens in 2023.
