Yerassimos Steris was born in 1898 in Digaleto, Kefalonia. His family moved to Alexandria, where he graduated from the Greek-French Lyceum of Alexandria in 1915. He enrolled in the Athens School of Fine Arts and studied there until 1917 under the guidance of teachers D. Geraniotis and G. Iakovides. During his studies, he received two awards: the Chrysovergion and the Averofion. In 1917, he served in the Army's Cartographic Service in Athens, where he served until 1919. From 1919 to 1926, he travelled throughout Europe, returned to Greece, graduated in 1926, and later received a three-year scholarship from the Volos Foundation to study psychology and philosophy at the Sorbonne in Paris. He also attended classes on frescoes and architecture at the École des Beaux-Arts. He returned to Greece in 1930, exhibited his work in Athens in 1931 and in Thessaloniki in 1936. During the intervening years, he moved between Athens, Milan, Alexandria, Cairo, and Thessaloniki.
In 1936, he settled in New York and became a naturalized American citizen in 1949. He developed his personal artistic style, with most of his artworks reflecting his childhood memories of history and mythology. These themes are placed in a surrealist atmosphere and often engages in a dreamlike dialogue with his personal experiences. His choice of subjects from ancient Greek mythology reveals a timeless and symbolic dimension, poetic interpretations and hidden meanings. He lived in New York until his passing in 1987.
