Nikos Baharides was born in 1946 in Lagada. From 1962 he settled in Thessaloniki where he attended painting classes (1970-1971) with Andreas Zambetoglou and Tolis Samaras. From 1977-1982 he was engaged in engraving, leading him to his first sculptures in wood and later in stone. He uses various natural materials: wood, sandstone, limestone, ophiolite, andesite, marble, fossilized shells and more rarely clay. The themes of his works are dominated by the human body, whole or parts of it, fish and birds, and primitive figures of life. These are figures that recur again and again, which he renders differently each time depending on the material and his intention: sometimes more realistic/ representational and sometimes more abstract, sometimes angular and dynamic or curved and more gentle.
