John Vassos was born in 1898 in Romania. In 1899 he moved with his family to Istanbul, where he remained until the end of World War I. In 1918 he settled permanently in the United States and studied first at the School of Fine Arts in Boston and then at the Art Student's League in New York. Around 1928 he returned to Greece for a short period of time.
Alongside painting, which was influenced by Abstraction and Surrealism, he was systematically involved in decoration, set design, advertising and graphic arts. The books he drew and illustrated are considered among his most inspiring moments. Furthermore, he founded the New York Display Company art studio in Manhattan.
