Born in Moscow, 1881, died in Moscow, 1941. From 1914 to 1917 he studied at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. In 1918- 20 he worked in the architectural workshop of Mossovet under Ivan Sholtovskii and Aleksei Schusev. In 1919- 20 he was a member of Shivskulptarch (Commission of Painterly- Sculptural- Architectural Synthesis). In 1920 he joined the Inkhuk, where he organised in 1921 the Architect’s Working Group. From 1920 he taught at Vkhutemas and established the research laboratory. In 1923 he co-founded ASNOVA (Association of New Architects) and in 1928 co-founded ARU (Association of Urbanist Architects). Until the mid 1930’s he was very active in formulating new concepts for urban planning (Project for the planning of the “Green Town” near Moscow, 1930). He participated in the competition for the Soviet Pavilion at the Exposition des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes in Paris (1924- 25), in the competition for Columbus monument in Santo Domingo (1929) and in the competition for the Palace of the Soviets in Moscow (1931- 32).
