Σωτήρης ΣπαθάρηςSotiris Spatharis was born in 1892 in Kifissia. A well-known clown, he studied under great masters of shadow theatre, such as Mimaros (D. Sardounis,), G. Marmara, G. Hatzaras, G. Dantas, Fotinos, Bekos, Th. Theodorellos etc. For reasons of livelihood, he worked in winters on construction sites and in summers he gave performances as a clown in Athens mainly but also in many provincial cities, in some performances he even collaborated with his son Eugene. Along with the traditional repertoire of Karagiozis, he wrote his own plays for the shadow theatre, while he designed the banners, posters and figures for his plays. Some of his figures were exhibited posthumously in exhibitions, while his works are in the Spathario Museum of Shadow Theatre in Maroussi. He died in Athens in 1974.
