Philippos Tsitsopoulos was born in 1967 in Athens. He studied at the Department of Visual and Applied Arts of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in the studio of V. Dimitreas (1985-1990), continued his studies in Spain, with a scholarship from N. Vernikos, first at the Circulo de bellas artes (1991-1992) and then at the Higher School of Fine Arts in Madrid (1992-1996). From 2005 to 2012 he worked as an external collaborator for the Education Department of the Prado Museum in Madrid. He lives and works between Madrid and London. His early paintings are stylistically close to the pursuits of abstract expressionism. He highlights the colours he uses through their gestural use and large dimensions. From the mid-1990s he incorporated performance, multimedia and installations into his artistic practice in order to explore the boundaries and connections between performance and painting. He held his first solo exhibition in 1993 in Madrid (Galileo, Centre for the Promotion of Young Artists) followed by a series of presentations in Spain and Greece. He has also participated in numerous group and international exhibitions in various venues in Europe, including The Serpentine Gallery, FACT in Liverpool, The Bluecoat, Frieze Art Fair in London, Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin, Tate Modern, Toynbee Studios Artsadmin, CGAC in Santiago de Compostela, Chelsea Theatre in London, etc.
