Παναγιώτης ΓράββαλοςPanayiotis Gravalos was born in 1933 in Lamia. He studied painting at the Athens School of Fine Arts under the tutelage of S. Papaloukas and G. Moralis (b. 1956). C. Kefallinos, professor of printmaking at the A.S.K.T., seeing his engravings, urged him to take up printmaking, but his collaboration with A. Tassos turned him to graphic arts. In the period 1961-1967 he taught engraving at the Athens Technological Institute, and from 1966 to 1993 he was a permanent collaborator of the Hellenic Post, designing many stamp series for which he received Greek and international awards. He was artistic collaborator of the Ionian Bank (1986-2000), artistic advisor of the Athens 2004 Olympic Games (1997-20014), artistic advisor of the medals of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, and designed the 24 Collector's Coins issued by the Mint of the Bank of Greece. He has presented his works in solo exhibitions and has participated in numerous group exhibitions, including several Biennale of Engraving (Norway 1986, Liege 1987, Heidelberg 1988). His work, both painting and printmaking, is dominated by the drawing element, which is clear and legible, with the result that the image moves entirely in the realm of figuration. He died in 2014.
