Yannis Stefanakis was born in 1951 in Grigoria, Heraklion, Crete. In the period 1971-1975 he studied typography and book art at the A.S.K.T. and in the period 1984-1989 he studied painting, engraving and iconography under the tutelage of G. In 1984, he worked in the field of painting and graphics with G. Papadakis, N. Kessanlis and Th. N. Exarchopoulos. For a long period he worked as a printer in the privately owned printing house he founded with his brothers. In 1980 he published the poetry journal "Epiplane" with the poet Michalis Katsaros, since 1989 he has been publishing "Neo Epiplane", a magazine for speech and visual arts, and since 2003 the magazine "Technopagion". Alongside his artistic work, he has been involved in organizing printmaking seminars, set design, illustrating artistic publications and teaching drawing, painting and printmaking. He is a member of the Greek Chamber of Fine Arts, the Greek Printmakers' Union, the Heraklion Visual Arts Network, the Society of Greek Writers and a founding member of ECUME Thessaloniki: (Mediterranean Cultural Exchanges). He has presented his work in more than thirty solo exhibitions in various cities in Greece and Brussels, while he has participated in numerous group exhibitions and international events (Greek engravers, Cultural Centre of the Municipality of Athens, Athens 1985, Ecology and Art, Athens 1989, Contemporary Greek Printmaking Exhibition, Luxembourg 1994, Configura 2, Erfurt Germany 1995, 22nd International Biennale of Printmaking, Slovenia 1997, Lights and Shadows, EPMAS 2000, International Triennale of Graphic Art, Fyrom 2003, IV Biennale Mediterranean des Arts de Tunis, Tunis 2006, 30th Mini Print International De Cadaques, Spain 2010, Exhibition of Contemporary Greek Art, Shanghai 2013 etc. ά.). He lives and works in Athens.
