Painting work

Vera Houtzoumi was born in 1920 in Athens. She initially studied literature at the University of Athens (b. 1946) and then turned to painting, moved to Paris and studied painting at the École du Louvre (1948-1950) and the Academie Julian (1951-1958) with André Planson. From 1964 to 1966 he lived and worked in New York. He was primarily concerned with painting on canvas, but also produced a series of paintings on glass, as well as a number of drawings for carpets and textiles. She was one of the first Greek painters to move towards abstraction, abandoning representational painting, while elements of Orphism and abstract expressionism can still be seen in her works, which gradually led her to capture a lyrical mood. She held two solo exhibitions in Greece, at the Nees Morfes Gallery in 1961 and 1966, but she took part in numerous group exhibitions in Greece, Europe and the USA. She died in Athens in 2007.
