Aris Georgiou was born in 1951 in Thessaloniki. He studied architecture in Montpellier, France, where he obtained a D.E.A. degree in urban planning. He returned to Thessaloniki in 1978 and initially worked in translation and radio (1979-1985, EPT Macedonia) with programmes on photography, contemporary art and music. He was a catalyst in the development of the field of photography in Greece, as in 1984 he was a founding member and member of the board of PARALLAXIS, Association for the Promotion of Creative Photography, in 1987 he co-founded the Hellenic Museum of Photography and in 1988 he was the initiator and since then for fifteen years the organizer of the Photography Concert. He was a member of the Working Group of the Ministry of Culture for the Structuring of a National Policy for Art Photography (1995) and an elected member of the Board of Directors of the Macedonian Centre for Contemporary Art (1996, 1998, 2004). As a collaborator of the artistic and literary magazine Endoktirio, he launched a special insert on photography entitled Camera Obscura, which presented individual portfolios of Greek and foreign photographers. In 1998 he was appointed director of the Thessaloniki Museum of Photography for a four-year term of office, from which he retired in 2002 and to which he bequeathed the Photographic Context. Since 1977 he has exhibited his painting and photography in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Greece and abroad and is a member of the Association of Artists of Visual Arts of Northern Greece, while he has published a large number of works (photographic, artistic, architectural, texts and translations) in various publications and magazines. The subject of his professional activity is architecture and, to a considerable extent, graphic arts, usually when they are of cultural interest.
