Alfred Pohl was born in 1928 in Essen. From 1947 to 1948 he studied at the Werkkunstschule Trier. From 1954 to 1957 he studied at the Pedagogical University of Lüneburg and from 1960 to 1961 at the Werkkunstschule Hannover. In 1965 he worked in the studio of Johnny Friedländer in Paris. From 1963 to 1967 he was an art education assistant at the Pedagogical University of Göttingen and from 1967 to 1970 he was a teacher at the Colegio Alexander von Humboldt Lima (Peru). From 1972 to 1974 he was a member of the Pedagogical Mission of the Ministry of Education of Colombia. From 1974 until his death in 2019, Alfred Pohl lived in Göttingen.
