Dimitris Alithinos was born in 1945 in Athens. He studied painting and architecture at the Athens School of Fine Arts (1968-1970), the Accademia di Belle Arti in Rome (1970-1974) and the École Spéciale d'Architecture in Paris (1974-1979). His multifaceted studies are reflected in his work, in which he attempts to convey a total experience of art through the collaboration of image, speech, movement, sound and action. In his first solo exhibitions, he presented a series of works that were shaped by the international revolutionary - political, social, artistic - spirit of the 1960s, which criticized the junta of the colonels and constituted some of the most powerful, hard-hitting, bold and revolutionary images of the period. His visual reflections revolving around the question of symbols, rituals, myths and the history of humanity lead him to create actions and environments based on a variety of allegories and symbolisms from different cultures. At the beginning of the 1980s he started a series of works called "Occultations", which he continues to this day, in various public spaces, art galleries, museums, which are a symbolic act, which concerns the dissemination of local traditions, and in which he places works under the ground, making a commentary on the concept of memory and time. Furthermore, he has presented his work in dozens of solo and group exhibitions in Greece and abroad, while his participation in international events is rich, including: Grands et Jeunes d'Aujourd'hui (Paris, 1975), Avanguardia e Sperimentazione (Modena, Venice, 1978), Europalia (Brussels, 1982), Biennale Sao Paulo (1983), Istanbul Biennale (1989) and Venice Biennale (1997, where he represented Greece together with St. In Venice, where he participated in the exhibition with St. Antonakos, Al. Al. Totsika). In 2014-2015 he held a series of exhibitions at the Armoury/Art, where he presented the work of Greek artists in solo exhibitions and in 2015 he was awarded by AICA Hellas for the contribution of his entire artistic work to the history of Greek art.
