Mariana Ignataki was born in 1977 in Thessaloniki, Greece. In 1997, she moved to Austria, where she studied architecture at the Technische Universität in Vienna and then to France, where she studied fine arts at the School of Fine Arts in Saint-Etienne. From 2010 to 2017, she lived in Beijing, China and since then, she has been working and living between Berlin and Athens. Her primary focus is on drawing, painting, and sculpture. In her works, which are mainly centred around human figures, she explores themes of identity and self-perception. The forms, usually female or of ambiguous gender, are placed in minimalist or exaggerated, kitschy compositions. Her works often depict surreal, ambiguous scenes that encapsulate a sense of dark humour, engage with the concept of the irrational and combine seemingly heterogeneous elements, resulting in ironic, strange, and grotesque situations.
