Τα πρώιμα έργα της Νίκης Καναγκίνη χαρακτηρίζονται από ένα έντονα αφαιρετικό στοιχείο που αντανακλά τις προσπάθειες και τους προβληματισμούς της καλλιτέχνιδας για τις αρχές του μοντερνισμού. Το ενδιαφέρον της στις αρχές της δεκαετίας του 1960 για το ένδυμα, το ύφασμα και τις ποιότητες του την στρέφουν προς την τεχνική της ταπισσερί. Η σειρά σχεδίων της που ανήκει στη συλλογή του Μουσείου Σύγχρονης Τέχνης και χρονολογείται στα μέσα της δεκαετίας του ’60 μαρτυρά τις επιρροές της καλλιτέχνιδας από την υφαντική και τις πλαστικές ιδιότητες που αυτή φέρει, συνάμα όμως επιτρέπει να διαφανούν το στοιχείο του ρυθμού, της επανάληψης, της χειρονομίας και της έντασης του μαύρου χρώματος στη λευκή επιφάνεια.

Niki Kanagini was born in 1933 in Alexandroupolis. She initially studied at the École Cantonale de Dessin et d'Art Applique in Lausanne (1952-1954), continued at the workshop of Yannis Moralis at the A.S.K.T. (1954-1958) and with a scholarship from the National Research Foundation she completed postgraduate studies at the Central School of Arts & Design in London (1958-1961). In 1962, the year she returned and settled permanently in Greece, she held her first solo exhibition.
Her work was varied and multi-dimensional. She used a variety of media, starting with drawing and painting, tapestry and engraving and continuing with mixed media constructions and installations in space. Kanagini was particularly active during the 1970s, a time of intense socio-political turmoil in which the artist focused on a thorough exploration of female identity through the renegotiation of female stereotypical representations. She died in 2008 in Athens.
