Niki Kanagini was born in 1933 in Alexandroupolis. She initially studied at the École Cantonale de Dessin et d'Art Applique in Lausanne (1952-1954), continued at the workshop of Yannis Moralis at the A.S.K.T. (1954-1958) and with a scholarship from the National Research Foundation she completed postgraduate studies at the Central School of Arts & Design in London (1958-1961). In 1962, the year she returned and settled permanently in Greece, she held her first solo exhibition.
Her work was varied and multi-dimensional. She used a variety of media, starting with drawing and painting, tapestry and engraving and continuing with mixed media constructions and installations in space. Kanagini was particularly active during the 1970s, a time of intense socio-political turmoil in which the artist focused on a thorough exploration of female identity through the renegotiation of female stereotypical representations. She died in 2008 in Athens.
