Valerios Caloutsis was born in 1927 in Chania. He studied painting at the Athens School of Fine Arts (A.S.F.A.) in the laboratory of Giannis Moralis from 1947 to 1953. Later, he went to London, where he continued his studies at the Saint Martin’s School of Art and then at the École de Beaux Arts in Paris.
From the beginning of his career, he combined technology with artistic expression, expressing his anxiety about formulating a personal vision with the most revolutionary scientific data, incorporating industrial materials, machine fragments, and more into his artworks. The function of light led him to the study of photokinetic art, combining photocells, transformers, mirrors and creating constructions where the sense of movement is achieved with visual effects. A lover of nature with a deep ecological consciousness, Caloutsis was one of the first Greek artists to address environmental destruction using a wide variety of artistic means, aiming to depict the reality surrounding him in a multifaceted way.
