Philip Tsiaras was born in 1952 in Nashua, New Hampshire to Greek parents. He studied comparative literature at Amherst College (b. 1975), took his first painting lessons from Luca Samara and in 1976, having won the Thomas Watson Fellowship, he travelled to Greece to translate contemporary Greek poetry into English. When he returned to America he began to work systematically with photography, while at the same time he became interested in the connection between writing and visual representation.
He seeks diverse ways of expression through traditional painting media, but also moves through a wide range of materials including glass, clay, bronze, photography and contemporary visual forms of expression such as environments and installations.
He has exhibited his work in numerous solo and group exhibitions in the U.S., Italy, Germany, Germany, Austria, etc., and participated in the 2001 Venice Biennale.
