Stefanos Tsivopoulos was born in 1973 in Prague. He studied at the Athens School of Fine Arts (1991-1996), in Amsterdam at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie (2000-2002) and the Sandberg Institute (2002-2004), as well as at the Rijsakademie van Beeldende Kunsten (2005-2006). An interdisciplinary artist, director and educator, he has presented his work extensively at art institutions and film festivals worldwide, including the Athens Biennale, Beijing, Budapest, Limerick, Moscow, Thessaloniki, Cinciang and the 4th Quadrennial in Riga. In 2013 he represented Greece at the 55th Venice Biennale with the multimedia installation "History Zero". He has exhibited at documenta 14, Kassel, Germany, in 2017 and Manifesta 8, Murcia, Spain, in 2010. He has also participated in group exhibitions at Tate Modern (London), Museum of Contemporary Art Barcelona (MACBA), Museum of Contemporary Art Antwerp (MuKHA), BAK (Utrecht), National Museum of Contemporary Art (Athens), Bundeskunsthalle (Bonn), Witte de With (Rotterdam) and Rubin Foundation (New York). His work mainly explores the past, collective and individual memory, genius loci and the kinds of discourses that develop in the public sphere. Image technology, television aesthetics and the historical authenticity of filmmaking are parallel fields of research and interest for Tsivopoulos. He lives and works in Amsterdam and New York.
