Leda Papaconstantinou was born in 1945 in Ampelonas, Larissa. She studied graphic arts at the Doxiadis School (1962-1965), attended the preparatory year of the Athens School of Fine Arts (1965-1966) and then studied Fine Arts at the Loughton College of Art in London and at the Kent Institute of Arts and Design in England (1967-71). Already in her student years she moved away from traditional visual media and worked with video, action, photography and environments in which she experimented with the human body, movement, the perceptions of the five senses and explored issues relating to the human body and gender identity, with a tendency to record sensory and psychic stimuli related to time and memory. Alongside her artistic work, she has been involved in the art direction of films and television productions. She returned to Greece in 1974 and settled in Athens. The lyrical and experiential approach to the themes she chose give her works their distinctive character and make her one of the most important Greek artists of her generation. He has held a series of solo exhibitions (more than forty) in various European cities and participated in group exhibitions in Greece and abroad. Among them stand out: Environment - Action (Athens, 1981), Europalia (Antwerp, 1982), XX Biennale Sao Paulo (1989), Athens by art (2004), Contemporary Greek Women (2011), The desire for freedom. In 2002, a retrospective presentation of her work was held at the Vafopouleio Cultural Centre in Thessaloniki (Retrospective on the work of Leda Papaconstantinou 1969-2000), in 2006 at the Benaki Museum (Leda Papaconstantinou. Performance, Film, Video 1969-2004) and in 2023-2024 at the National Museum of Contemporary Art (Chronos in my hands. Leda Papaconstantinou. Retrospective). She lives and works in Spetses.
