Irini Karayannopoulou was born in 1973 in Thessaloniki. She studied at the École Supérieure d' Art et Design de Saint Etienne (1997) and the following year she studied at the Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Kunste in Karlsruhe with a scholarship from the French state. She lived for a time first in New York and then in Thessaloniki, until settling in Athens in 2002, where she still lives and works today. Since the beginning of her work, the female figure has dominated her compositions in different versions and the role of women has been treated with different approaches. Starting from series of drawings , where they seem to create narrative stories she continues with different techniques and media, such as painting, collage, animation, short films, while in her most recent works she makes interventions on vintage soft-porn images. She has held dozens of solo exhibitions in Greece and abroad, mainly in Europe, and has participated in a number of group exhibitions and international events (Jeune Peinture Contemporaine, Marseille 1999, First Mediterranean Art Festival, Alexandria 1999, Biennale de jeune peinture et sculpture, Nice France 1999, Distanzen, Konstanz Germany 2003, Everyday Hellas, New York 2004 etc.). She is editor of JANUS Femzine, co-founder of the artistic duo Extra-Conjugale and co-producer of the films Twin Automat.
