Γιώργος ΜαυροϊδήςGeorge Mavroidis was born in 1913 in Piraeus. Originally from Cyprus, he spent his childhood in Larnaca. He studied law and political science at the University of Athens and then served in the diplomatic corps (1946-1959) until his election as Professor at the Athens School of Law, where he was Director (1975-1977) and then Rector (1977-1978). He retired in 1982. The subject matter of his works includes mainly female figures and nudes, landscapes, still lifes and many portraits of his friends and well-known personalities. Alongside his painting work, he was involved in set design and clay sculpture, as well as writing literary texts, short stories and poetry collections. He presented his work in solo exhibitions, mainly in Greece and the United States, and after his death a series of retrospective presentations of his artistic career were held: in 1986 at the National Gallery, in 2000 by MIET, the Thessaloniki Cultural Centre, in 2003 at the Benaki Museum and in 2010 by the V. & M. Theocharakis Foundation. He has participated in many group and international exhibitions: Panhellenic (1948, 1952, 1957, 1957, 1963, 1965, 1967), Sao Paulo Biennale (1955 and 1957, when he received an honorable mention), Alexandria (1962) and Venice (1966, where he participated together with N. Georgiades), etc. In 1995 he was awarded the Cyprus Award of Arts and Letters and the Athens Academy of Fine Arts. He died in 2003 in Athens.
