Yorgos Lazongas was born in 1945 in Larissa, Greece. He studied architecture at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (1963-1970) and later, with a scholarship from the French Government, studied painting studies at the Ecole des Art Decoratifs in Paris (1976). He taught drawing and painting at the Department of Architecture at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (1982-1999) and was elected a professor at the Athens School of Fine Arts (ASFA) in 2008, where he taught until 2012.
From his early works, Lazongas formed a personal style that is gestural and instinctive. His art captures his personal perceptions, experiences and emotions. He places significant emphasis on drawing, which runs through his entire artistic activity, while gradually enriching his work with various media, including painting, installations, video, photography, and engravings, depending on his expressive needs. Influences from ancient Greek culture, especially mythology, and Mediterranean culture are evident in his works.
His work has been presented in solo and group exhibitions in Greece and abroad, and he received awards such as the Prix Europe in Oostende, Belgium, in 1982. In 2008, he created the permanent installation titled "Diadromes" for the Elaionas Metro Station in Athens. George Lazongas passed away in Athens in 2022.
