Kyriakos Katzourakis was born in 1944 in Athens. He studied painting under the guidance of G. Moralē and scenography with V. Vasileiadis at the Athens School of Fine Arts (A.S.F.A.) from 1963 to 1968. In the period from 1969 to 1972, he co-founded the group "New Greek Realists" along with Valavanidis, Digas, Botsoglou, and Psychopaidis. This group sought new ways of artistic expression and promoted critical realism as a reflection of society in art. Katzourakis continued his studies at St. Martin's School of Art (1973-1974) and Croydon College of Art (1974-1975) in London, where he stayed until 1985.
His artwork, predominantly human-centered, revolved around the issues of politicization and social critique for a significant period. His compositions, primarily realistic with elements of strong expressionism, aimed to satirize contemporary socio-political realities. Throughout his artistic career, he combined painting with theatre, creating scenography and costumes, engaged in writing, and actively ventured into filmmaking in 2000, producing both short and feature-length films. From 2005 to 2011, he served as a regular professor at the School of Fine Arts of Aristotle University in Thessaloniki. Kyriakos Katzourakis passed away in 2021 in Athens.
