Slava Mogutin was born in 1974 in Kemerovo, Siberia, Russia. Artist and writer was exiled from Russia in 1995 due to his sharp writing on homosexuality issues and his activist actions. He applied for and received political asylum in the United States and moved to New York City where he lives and works.
For more than two decades he has been documenting youth culture and the queer community in Russia and around the world. He tends to tell people's stories through the lens of his experience as an immigrant. He has made sure that minorities, people living on the margins of society, who do not receive adequate representation in mainstream culture, find a place in his work.
In 2000 he was awarded the Andrea Belly Poetry Prize, one of Russia's most prestigious literary prizes.
